CHIPPENHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE: ST JUDE'S, formerly HW Transport, have finally ended their miserable run of 32 successive league defeats.
They recorded their first league win in the Shoestrings sponsored Chippenham Sunday League win since April last year by defeating The Plough 2-0 in Division Three.
With the score 0-0 at the break, The Plough were reduced to 10 men when goalkeeper Aiden Bell was sent off after handling outside of the area.
From the free kick Darren Grey fired St Jude's into the lead. The Plough had the chance to level after Ian Brown up-ended Russell Francis in the area, but Robin Walker's spot kick was saved by Jude's goalkeeper Mark Sinclair, playing in his first game of the season.
Eight minutes from time St Jude's doubled the scoreline. After Paul Revening was pulled down in the box Grey put the spot kick away with ease to earn St Jude's a memorable 2-0 win.
As well as the penalty save keeper Sinclair produced a string of fine saves to deny the Plough and keep a clean sheet which was the club's first since December 1996, when they beat Melksham Colts 2-0.
The victory also earns them the team of the week award.
Poor defending proved costly for Unicorn AFC, who suffered a 5-1 defeat against rivals Semington Rovers.
Danny Box put Unicorn in front before Dave Castle (2), Stuart Barber, Danny Phillips (penalty) and substitute Steve Rosling completed Rovers' nap hand.
Goals from Matthew Thompson and Neil Murray moved Christian Malford into second spot as they recorded a 2-0 win over Farmhouse FC.
Things could have been different had the prolific goal scorer Lee Hayward not missed a penalty for the Farmhouse.
Old Lane United were unable to raise a side for their match with Hare and Hounds and Biddestone Social Club had to call their game off against Malmesbury Victoria.
With a number of their youngsters playing for Biddestone Youth against Melksham Youth in a rearranged match, Mike Few, who was suffering from flu, had to play in goal when first choice goalkeeper failed to turn up.
His efforts enabled Biddestone Youth to run out 3-2 winners after extra time and a penalty shoot out. For team-mate Danny Jones it was his second game in two days that had gone to extra time.
Division Two
WEST Lavington and Terry's FC renewed old rivalries in the top match in Division Two.
Having claimed promotion as winners and runners-up respectively from the Third Division last term a thrilling match was promised, but the game never lived up to its pre-match expectations.
Terry's were without Robbie Allison, but their will to win proved greater and saw them to a deserved 3-2 victory over a West Lavington side who were missing a number of key players.
Lavington started brightly and had the chance to take a second minute lead when Steve Moxham's through ball was met by Nathan Cook, who drove wide of the target with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Terry's took the lead in the sixth minute when Mel Massaoud's corner caught the Lavington defence napping and allowed Mark Ashton to bundle the ball home.
Lavington's drew level through Derek Jones, who headed home from Simon Drewitt's inch perfect free kick in the 20th minute.
Finishing the first half with a flourish, Lavington seized the advantage when another excellent free kick from Drewitt caught Terry's defence all at sea, allowing Ponting to head the visitors into a 2-1 half-time lead.
Terry's were once again on level terms in the 50th minute when Simon Kitchen ran on to Robbie Brown's through ball and lobbed the ball over the on-rushing Bates and into the empty net.
Terry's took a deserved lead in the 67th minute when Robbie Brown rose high to head home Massaoud's corner.
Trowbridge Harriers remain in a pole position after defeating Navy Tavern United 2-0. Tony Singer capped a man of the match performance when he opened the scoring for Harriers in the first half. John Hubbard converted a second half spot kick to earn Harriers their victory.
Avon Bradford were trailing 1-0 against Potley United with only 15 minutes to go, but ran out of steam to suffer a 6-0 defeat.
Ian Wootten (2), Shaun House (2), Jamie Petherbridge and a stunning 30-yard drive from Tony Falcone wrapped up the victory.
North Bradley, who were without the influential midfielder Julian Hooper, suffered a 4-2 defeat against Westbridge United, who played the final 25 minutes with only 10 players having lost defender Paul Vooght through injury.
Anthony King put United one up before Dave Blackie equalised. A double from Paul Daly made it 3-1 before Bendell added a penalty to make it 4-1. Blackie added a further late consolation for Bradley, who had a penalty by Andrew Wilcox saved by United's stand-in keeper Darren McDuff.
Two goals from Scott McMullen was not enough to save bottom of the table Sutton Benger from a 3-2 defeat against Trowbridge Town Colts.
McMullen had cancelled out goals from Matthew Coles and Alan House, only for Nick Butler to secure the Colts their victory with a winner midway through the second half.
Macmillan thought that he had earned Benger a point, but was denied a hat-trick when his effort was disallowed for offside.
Premier Division
REIGNING champions Cooper Avon Rangers are still looking to register their first victory of the season after suffering a 6-3 defeat against newly promoted Royal Oak (formerly Quarryman's Arms).
Frank Rogers put the Oak in front from the penalty spot before Steve Collett and Leigh Bramley netted to give Rangers the lead. Tim Jefferies levelled and then put the Oak 3-2 ahead before Damian Bence bought Rangers to level terms once again.
Rangers, who played the whole of the second half with only 10 men having lost John Scott at half-time, finally fell to further goals from Jefferies, who completed his hat-trick, Rogers' second of the match and an own goal from Steve Cripps.
A hat-trick in the first 15 minutes from goal machine Marc Lanfear lifted Westbury Rangers A into top spot.
Lanfear continued his purple patch by taking his goal tally to 16 in five games as his hat-trick earned Rangers a 3-1 victory over Melksham Motor Spares. Simeon Mills replied.
Box's 100 per cent record remains intact after they defeated previous leaders Dog and Fox Ashley 3-0. James Lye gave Box the lead in the 25th minute from the penalty spot. Ben Sammut, who was making his debut, scored in the 55th and 90th minutes to complete the scoring.
Neston 81 and Corsham Centre United were involved in a seven-goal thriller, with Neston coming out on top 4-3.
Neil Brown gave United the advantage which was cancelled out by a Rob Humphries' effort. Les Davies and Jeff Goodway made it 3-1 to Neston before Dave Kilmurray reduced the arrears once again. An own goal from United's Chris Curry on his debut put Neston in the driving seat before Luke Chapman hit United's third.
Veteran Winsley player Colin Earp was inspirational in his side's 2-1 win over The Packhorse, who took the lead in the fifth minute thanks to Richard Chaffey's looping header. Earp came on as a first half substitute and had an immediate impact when he set up Dave Birlesson to level the scores before the break.
Earp capped a superb display when he netted midway through the second half to earn Winsley their points. Earp also had an effort disallowed before Winsley goalkeeper Chris Birlesson produced a superb save at the death to secure both points.
Malmesbury Town defeated Avon News 7-0. Anthony Vizard had given the Town the lead before the Newsmen were reduced to 10 men when their goalkeeper James Veale was sent off 10 minutes into his debut for the club. Vizard went on to complete his hat-trick and doubles from Mark Neale and Matty Clarke completed the scoring.
