The Army has just spent £12m on a road which will be used by tanks and other military vehicles to cross Salisbury Plain.

Not surprisingly many people in Wiltshire who have been campaigning for decades to get bypasses and other road improvements are not impressed.

It seems strange that one Government department has money to splash out on new roads while another has none.

Why can the Ministry of Defence afford £12m for a road to nowhere, which is mainly used by off-road vehicles with huge caterpillar tracks, while the poor old environment department has no money to build new roads which may save lives?

People in Westbury, Yarnbrook, Semington and the Wylye Valley have the right to ask this question and demand answers.

Just because the money comes out of a different pot is not a good enough reason.

Surely the Government should look at all of its spending and if one department has money to spare then some should be passed to ones that are struggling.

Answers please Mr Blair.
