The Autumn and Winter exhibition of Swindon Artists Society will be cancelled if a new venue cannot be found.

Each year the society has held two exhibitions annually at West Swindon Link Library. But this year a new venue will have to be found for the exhibition because the space the group normally uses has been filled with computers.

Chief librarian David Allen is hoping to convert another area of the library to accommodate exhibitions such as this, but work is not yet complete on this area, and is not likely to be in time for this year's exhibition.

Diana Crafer, the secretary of the Swindon Artists Society, says more venues need to be provided to accommodate exhibitions such as this.

She said: "Other societies in North Wiltshire, such as Chippenham and even Highworth, have very good halls in which to hold exhibitions and their officials find it extremely difficult to believe that a town the size of Swindon has nowhere.

"The arts centre is fine for small displays but it is too small to accommodate anything the size of Swindon Artists Society."

The society was founded in the 1930s by an arts teacher at Swindon College who wanted a forum to showcase his talents and those of some of his students.

The main emphasis of has always been on exhibiting and Mrs Crafer says the society is an important aspect of the town. She said: "If you go to the exhibitions, it is amazing how talented some of the artists are. I think, given the image Swindon would like to have, that it is important for the town to have a proper art gallery with room to exhibit all the local artists."
