A golden wedding photograph taken in 1906 prompted a unique family gathering 94 years later.

Around 100 descendants of William and Selina Greenaway, many of whom had never seen each other before, met at Nore Marsh Farmhouse, Wootton Bassett, on Sunday.

The get-together was organised by Evelyn and Paul Tucker after they were given a photograph of their grandparents celebrating 50 years of marriage at the beginning of the last century.

Evelyn said: "Two years ago I was given a copy of the photograph, and became fascinated by the number of related families I had never met and who still live in the Purton and Wootton Bassett area.

"Now, at the start of another century, it occurred to me that there would be no better way of recording the present than to bring together their descendants for a millennium picture."

At the gathering, relatives shared their family anecdotes and Evelyn and Paul set up a display which included a family tree, birth and marriage certificates, newspaper cuttings and old memorial cards which lamented the passing of forebears.

William Greenaway and his wife Selina were both from Purton, where his father John was licensee of The Angel and her father was the local butcher.

The party included a photographic session and a speech of thanks from Evelyn and a prayer by the vicar, Rev Bernard Garratt, who blessed the family.

Evelyn said: "It was all so lovely. The atmosphere was wonderful and I'm grateful to everyone who helped to make it so memorable."
