A CENTURY of waiting came to an end when a market finally returned to the centre of town.
After 100 years, Midsomer Norton once again has its own High Street Market. For many years the event had been held in the car park of the Welton Rovers football ground.
However, many groups in the town have always felt that its proper place was in the High Street instead. The pilot event was held throughout Thursday, October 19, with two further markets planned for November 16 and December 21.
The site is managed by Roger White of Somerset Farmers Market Ltd, which has already enjoyed successes in Frome, Chard, Yeovil and Glastonbury.
Mr White said: "Although the current site is small, I think we can make a successful and fun event which will benefit the community."
Mendip district councillor Chris Watt helped Mr White to set up and supported the traders throughout the morning.
He said: "Farmers' markets are great news for everyone. For those of us concerned with where and how our food is produced we can buy it direct from the hand that grew it.
"For farmers it provides a valuable outlet to sell direct and gain a better profit margin. For the environment there is a boost as 'food miles' are reduced and pollution from lorries is lowered.
"I hope the market will be a great success."
Julian Sheppard, chairman of the Norton Radstock Link Group, added: "Besides being good for the local community, the aim of the market is to make it a tourist attraction that will draw visitors from all over the area, that in turn will encourage the local economy.
"It will, when it is up and running, add hustle and bustle, colour and excitement to interest all visitors and shoppers."
