ALFRED Jenkins, founder of the Chippenham Jazz Society, has died at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, aged 91.
Mr Jenkins, known to his friends as Jenks, of Parklands, Chippenham, founded the society in 1986, helping to attract a number of well-known jazz artists, including Andy Sheppard and Alan Skidmore, to appear in the town.
"Jenks started the society in Chippenham because it was something he wanted to do and he enjoyed sharing the music with like-minded people," said Julie Moran, secretary of the Chippenham Jazz Society.
Mrs Moran said Mr Jenkins regularly attended meetings at the Gladstone Liberal Club in Timber Street until shortly before he died.
Born in Preston, Mr Jenkins moved to Chippenham in 1958 to work at Westinghouse Brakes and Signals. He retired in 1971 and was secretary of the Workers Education Association in Chippenham.
He has three daughters Susan, Frances and Dilys, and five grandchildren.
The funeral will take palce on November 1 at noon at Semmington Crematorium.
