A RARE original portfolio of etchings of Marlborough scenes by the 19th century artist EJ Burrow is coming up for auction at Hamptons next Wednesday together with several etchings by former mayor Christopher Hughes.
The late Mr Hughes, who was Mayor of Marlborough in 1935, and again in 1944, was a prolific artist who left behind him a legacy of sketches of the town in the years before, during and after the Second World War.
His etchings, which will come under the hammer at Hamptons fine art sale next Wednesday, will include a view of C House at the college, two views of St Peter's Church, one of the High Street and one looking up Kingsbury Street showing Dormy House and the Gazette office.
Auctions manager David Harrison said it was believed two of the Hughes etchings bear the original signature of the artist whose work has lately become very collectable.
Etchings by EJ Burrow are also in great demand and Mr Harrison said he was expecting enormous local interest in the rare original portfolio of ten sketches showing views of the collage, Duck's Bridge (later replaced by the Pewsey Road bridge) and of historic buildings in the town.
Mr Harrison said: "We get etchings by Burrow coming up quite regularly but I have never seen a collection of all ten in their original portfolio before. Although they are in lovely condition I would expect them to sell for £300 to £400."
