PEOPLE in the Chippenham area are to be canvassed on what they want to see happen to the former Goldiggers building.
The nightclub in Timber Street has been closed since Easter after its owners, Gold Leisure, fell behind with rent.
On Tuesday, North Wiltshire District Council decided to launch a public consultation exercise.
Questions are to be formulated by district council officers and will be presented to councillors at the next executive meeting on November 9.
If the questionnaire meets councillors' approval it will go out to people across the district.
"We have to know what the people want," said Tory leader, Coun Toby Sturgis.
"We need to assess whether to sell Goldiggers or keep it as an investment."
At Tuesday's meeting council leader, Coun David Packham, read out a letter from MASK, a group which has collected a petition urging the council to have the former nightclub converted in to a performing arts centre.
Goldiggers closed with Gold Leisure Ltd owing around £47,000 to the district council in rent arrears.
The council is now taking advice from its retained valuers and consulting the Local Plan.
