DEVIZES Town footballers will be bidding for a place in the club's history books on Saturday October 28.

The team of 2000 has the chance to become the first in the club's 111-year history to reach the first round of the FA Cup, sponsored by Axa.

Up to 200 supporters are expected to travel with the team for Saturday's fourth qualifying round tie against FA Umbro Trophy holders Kingstonian, and manager Brian Newlands has promised them his players will be giving their all to in an attempt to cause a cup upset.

"I can't say we are going to win the game, but I can guarantee all the players will give 100 per cent," said Newlands, who works in the brewhouse at Wadworth Brewery.

"As long as we give 100 per cent, I don't mind if we go down to a 6-0 hammering."

The only other time Devizes reached this stage of the national knockout competition was in 1972, when the run was ended by a 2-0 defeat at Alton Town.

And former Devizes Town midfielder Ron Low, who played in that game, is urging the present side to go one better.

Said Low: "We were pretty confident we would beat Alton in 1972, but it wasn't to be. It would be great if the present Devizes team could beat our record.

"They've got a big task ahead of them, but I saw them beat Melksham Town in a previous FA Cup game earlier this season and Devizes looked a useful side."

If Saturday's game ends in a draw, the replay will be at Nursteed Road on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.30pm.
