Highworth Town 1, Brislington 2

HIGHWORTH Town made a quick exit from the FA Carlsberg Vase, beaten 2-1 at home by Screwfix Direct League side Brislington.

The visitors took the lead on 38 minutes when Tommy Whealdon committed a foul on the edge of the box and with the Highworth defenders forming a wall, Richard Thomas took a quick free kick and put the visitors one up.

On the stroke of half-time Brislington went further ahead when David Morrisey caught a home defender in possession, robbed him of the ball and ran on to score the second.

Ten minutes into the second half the visitors had Jeff Hazell sent off for a second bookable offence and, down to ten men, Brislington mounted a rearguard action, with goalkeeper Mark Brain in sparkling form.

Jon Reeves hit the bar with a long range volley and Justin Miller forced the goal keeper to make a great save from a close range header before Highworth eventually scored in the 85th minute.

Peter Moss was pulled down by the goalkeeper, who escaped with a yellow card, and David Webb stepped up to score from the spot.

In a hectic last five minutes Highworth threw everybody forward but the visitors held out for a place in the second round.

Cirencester Academy also have no further interest in the FA Vase after losing 2-0 at Carterton, Wyatt scoring just before the break with Rodney making sure a couple of minutes from time.

Swindon Supermarine made a shock first round exit when they were beaten at home by Yate Town 3-0.

The visitors, in the bottom half of the Premier Division table after a poor start to the season, brought to an end a run of 11 consecutive wins by the South Marston side.

In the opening 20 minutes Supermarine looked well below par, the visitors looking much sharper and more direct and it came as no surprise when they took the lead on 24 minutes.

A harmless looking throw-in on the left was gathered by Williams, who left the Supermarine goalkeeper Chris Webb flat footed with a tremendous 35 yard volley.

The goal failed to spur the home side to greater efforts and just before the break they received a further blow when Tony Joyce sliced a hurried clearance into his own net to give Yate a 2-0 advantage at the break.

A different looking Supermarine side took the field after the interval Richard Hadgkiss having a good header saved by the keeper, Matt Saye missing a good chance from six yards and a shot by Doug Imrie hit the bar all in the first five minutes.

The home side continued to dominate the half with several half chances going begging but they failed to penetrate the resolute Yate defence who fought hard for every ball.

To add further to Supermarine's woe a long ball into the penalty area in the last minutes of the game was fumbled by goalkeeper Chris Webb and Metheringham was on hand to fire the loose ball into the net for Yate's third goal and a place in the draw for the second round.

Supermarine manager Alan Dyton was disappointed after the final whistle.

He said: "After our disastrous first half we were always chasing the game and full credit to Yate, who deserve their win."

In the Premier Division, Wootton Bassett turned in a good performance to beat a much improved Milton United side on their own ground 1-0, Nathan Hall scoring in the 35th minute.

In Division One Purton are still without a win after losing at home to Ardley United 4-1. Former Purton top scorer Steve Tucker did the damage for United with a couple of clinical finishes at the far post in the first half. Chris Ayris and player-manager Paul Spittles added two more. Purton netted a consolation goal in the 85th minute from Stuart Cole.

Malmesbury Vics did well to beat Ross Town 4-2, with two goals from Sasha Fast and one each from Walton and Sinclair.
