New tax rules benefit poorer families by up to £30 a week, a Swindon MP claims.

Michael Wills spoke out as he helped to launch an advertising campaign for the Working Families Tax Credit.

Mr Wills, who represents North Swindon, calculates that 91,000 families across the West receive an average of more than £76 a week because of the scheme.

This, he claims, makes them an average of £30 a week better off than they would have been under the old Family Credit system.

Mr Wills said: "The Working Families Tax Credit is crucial if we are going to tackle child poverty and make work pay. Already Labour has helped take a million children out of poverty, and brought in a range of measures to help parents combine work with the vital job of bringing up children."
