A mother and her two children were crushed against a wall when two cars collided and span into them.
Her six-year-old daughter is seriously ill in hospital. The mother was also badly hurt in the accident in Highworth and her three-year-old son received minor injuries.
The family were walking along the B4019 at Eastrop at 5pm on Friday when a red Peugeot 106 and a blue Vauxhall Cavalier collided.
The cars rebounded into them and pinned them against a wall, crushing the six-year-old's leg.
She was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital with serious head and leg injuries and then transferred to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where she was operated on. Doctors say she is now comfortable.
Her 39-year-old mother was also taken to PMH with serious leg injuries and underwent surgery. Her condition is also described as poorly but stable.
The driver of the Peugeot, a 50-year-old woman from Swindon, was seen by ambulance officers at the scene but was not taken to hospital.
Police are appealing for witnesses and also want to speak to anyone who helped the family after the crash.
Swindon Duty Inspector David McMullin said: "This was quite a horrific collision and I really feel for the family. The little girl is stable but there is a long way to go before she recovers from her injuries."
Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Swindon Police on 528111.
