A daredevil skier is preparing to take to the slopes in an amazing challenge for charity.

Roy Metcalfe, 43, from North-bourne Road, Swindon, is to take part in the Ski 3 Countries Chal-lenge Marathon in March.

He will be attempting to ski 200kms through Italy, France and Switzerland in just two days.

Mr Metcalfe, a sales manager, needs to raise £1,200 to take part in the challenge but hopes to raise more money to beat this target.

The event is organised by Scope who work with disabled people, their families and carers.

Mr Metcalfe is raising funds for Scope's work with children and adults with cerebral palsy.

"I have always supported Scope through covenants but this marathon gives me the opportunity to make a big difference," he said.

Mr Metcalfe was inspired to accept the challenge after reading about the event in the Advertiser. He responded to a call for action from Joe Inglis, from BBC's Vets in Practice, who participated in this event last year.

Although a keen skier, Mr Metcalfe has no doubts about the difficulties involved in taking up the challenge, which takes in heights of 12,500ft and some of the world's hardest vertical terrain.

"I'm going to have to start doing some serious training. I know it's going to be tough but it feels so good to be taking part in an event for Scope," said Mr Metcalfe.

He has already kicked his fund-raising into action and is planning an e-mail auction.

"We've had a great response so far with people and companies donating great prizes.

"My own company Dataphone has donated a Range Rover and we also have hotel accommodation, golf events and meals in top restaurants up for grabs."

Among the more unusual donations are the services of a top London landscape gardener and a driving lesson on the Ffestiniog steam railway.

Mr Metcalfe will be taking up his skis on March 1 next year.
