Police are advising motorists to be aware of the dangers of a low sun after it was blamed for a nine-car smash.

The accident happened yesterday at 8am on the Swindon side of the M4 overbridge at Liddington.

Police say a Peugeot 306 collided with temporary traffic lights on the B4192.

This caused the vehicles behind either to slow down or stop, causing a shunt type collision.

All of the vehicles involved were damaged, some extensively.

Police spokeswoman Alvina Kumar said low sun was blamed for causing the accident.

"We would like to advise drivers to be aware of the potential dangers of a low sun in the winter months and reduce speed accordingly," she said.

A man driving a Ford Mondeo was trapped in his vehicle and had to be cut free by firefighters.

He was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital with suspected back and whiplash injuries but was scheduled to be released.

A 47-year-old woman driver of a Mitsubishi Colt sustained extensive body bruising and was also taken to PMH. She too was scheduled to be released.

Two men and a woman were taken to hospital for minor cuts and bruises, and all three have now been released.

The other vehicles involved in the collision were a Mercedes, an LDV Convoy, a second Ford Mondeo, a Saab and two Ford Fiestas.

As well as the dangers of a low sun police are reminding drivers to ensure vehicles are kept in top condition as winter commuting approaches.

With dark nights and wet conditions traffic police urge motorists to make sure lights are kept clean and brakes, tyre pressures and condition are checked regularly.

Police are appealing for witnesses to yesterday's accident to contact them.

If you can help with their inquiries contact PC Phil Staynings, of Swindon police traffic department based at Westlea police station, on Swindon 528111.
