WIMBORNE 0, WOOTTON BASSETT 13: WOOTTON Bassett produced their best performance of the season in atrocious conditions at Wimborne, scoring their first ever away victory over the Dorset side.

Veteran Kiwi Steve Cunning-ham, having a rare outing at scrum half, cheekily dropped a goal early on.

Excellent defence then kept Wimborne at bay as they attempted to use the conditions to force their way back into the game.

Midway through the half, Bassett skipper Neil James kicked a penalty to increase Bassett's lead, and then superb defence up to half time spoiled Wimborne's hopes of a revival.

In the second half Bassett produced an impressive scrummaging display with the front row trio of Tim Harrison, Andrew Lock and David Mason taking five strikes against the head.

The final nail in the Wimborne coffin came when Bassett took a scrum against the head and a quick feed from No 8 Keith Whittaker found Neil James, whose deft pass gave centre Mark Lewis a simple score under the posts. James converted to complete the scoring.

After the match Bassett coach Nick Cavill said: "Despite the conditions the Bassett lads came through with flying colours and there's a real confidence running through the whole team just at the minute."

In blustery conditions at Ballards Ash, Wootton Bassett Under 9s entertained Chippenham and Cleve U9s. Playing Chippenham first, the team quickly adjusted to the slippery surface and took an early lead. Despite Chippenham drawing level at two tries each, the team rallied and ran out winners five tries to two.

Against much stiffer opposition in Cleve, the under 9s responded with their best performance of the season so far to end up winning by three tries to nil.
