FORMER mayor and mayoress of Wootton Bassett, Bernard and Phyllis Male, have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

The couple, of New Road, are both natives of Somerset.

"We met at a ballroom dancing class in the Blake Memorial Hall at South Petherton, where no wallflowers were allowed," said Mrs Male.

Mr Male, 71, said: "The instructor told me, 'There's your partner' and indicated Phyl. And so it proved to be."

Mr Male was a town councillor for eight years, and his term as mayor, in 1993 to 94, was notable for his scheme to formalise Wootton Bassett's friendship link with RAF Lyneham.

They are long-serving volunteers at the 65 Plus party, for which they have helped to organise transport and catering. Mr Male is a member of Wootton Bassett Carnival committee, and the Wilts and Berks Canal support group.

"I'm also a trustee for Old Court Pre-School, and do a few odd jobs for them from time to time," he said.

Mrs Male enjoys embroidery and is a member of the banner group at the Methodist Church. She is also on the duty rota for the Under-5's Group, and was a volunteer at the Sue Ryder shop for five years

The couple, who have a son and a daughter and four grandchildren, say a sense of humour is a vital part of a happy marriage. "We laugh at mistakes, agree to differ," they said.
