THE Housing Action for the Young Association is looking for household items such as towels and bedding to help homeless youngsters in Malmesbury.

The association runs a house in Athelstan Road to provide needy youngsters between the ages of 16 and 25 with temporary accommodation.

Miriam Nicholls, chairman of the house committee, said difficult family situations were the most common cause of teenagers finding themselves on the street.

She said: "Family problems can bring huge stresses which often lead to teenagers being turned out, or in a few cases, physical abuse. The house gives teenagers who can't live with their parents any longer a breathing space and cooling off period to heal wounds and prevent long-term damage."

She said about ten to 15 youngsters pass through the house each year.

The house has four bed-sitting rooms with a shared kitchen and bathroom. No drugs are permitted, and disruptive or aggressive behaviour can lead to the termination of a tenancy.

Resettlement and support workers encourage youngsters to work towards living independently. They also encourage them wherever possible to continue their education.

Mrs Nicholls said the association was an independent, voluntary group which received funding from North Wiltshire District Council and Wiltshire Health Authority.

But she said: "Extra items, food and donations for the house are always a help."
