DESPITE severe weather warnings on Sunday, more than 200 walkers braved the elements in the Devizes Lions sponsored walk on its first time on a new date.

The ten-mile walk was seen off from the Wharf by Mayor of Devizes, Coun Tim Price, and Lions Club president, Roger Stratton.

It followed its usual route along Quakers Walk, up Roundway Hill to Leipzig Plantation and along its circular path past Roundway Covert.

Once back at the Wharf, participants were treated to hot drinks and hot dogs.

Organiser John Twentyman said he had been concerned the weather would put walkers off but was full of praise for those who attended and helped raise just under £8,500 for local charities.

He said: "Every time we hold this event we seem to be lucky with the weather, but it was especially true this year.

"We were not expecting to raise as much money on this occasion as we decided to bring forward the walk from our usual springtime date, due to our full programme of events this year."

The Lions Club will be holding its presentation evening at Devizes Bowls Club on December 19 and hope that all participants from last Sunday will be able to attend and receive their sponsor money.

The hard-working Lions will now concentrate on their busy programme of Christmas events, including their collection of gifts as Santa visits local communities on his festive float.
