RETAILERS in the town centre are being asked to show some Christmas spirit by opening their doors to the elderly and disabled for a special night of shopping.
This year's late night shopping event for those with mobility problems is due to take place on Thursday, November 30.
To ensure its success, organisers are appealing to all shop managers to keep their stores open until at least 8pm.
The annual event is being organised by Shopmobility, which hires mobility aids in the town centre, Swindon Council, and Swindon Town Centre Management.
Shopmobility spokesman Tony Hearn said: "We are looking to hold our late night event for the residents of local nursing homes, sheltered accommodation and others with mobility difficulties so that they can come into town to do their Christmas shopping and view the lights.
"For many of them it may be the only time that they come into the town centre during the year."
Around 200 shoppers are expected to take part, along with 300 helpers from local schools and youth organisations.
Those attending the event will be able to see Swindon's Christmas lights, which will be turned on the week before.
The light switch-on is being hosted by the Wyvern Theatre on Thursday, November 23, when stars of this year's pantomime along with local choral groups will attend.
Cairngorm reindeer will be visiting Wharf Green on the night, thanks to the Brunel Centre management, and air-blown characters will be lit-up in Canal Walk.
Santa's grotto in the Brunel Centre will be officially opened in the plaza area between Marks and Spencer and Boots. There will also be funfair rides and traditional stalls in Canal Walk, and after the lights have been switched on under the canopy of The Parade at 7pm, a carol concert will take place.
The traditional Christmas carnival will take place in the town centre on Sunday, November 26, between 10.30am and 11.15am, with a variety of community and professional acts.
