POTENTIALLY dangerous play equipment is being taken out of a North Bradley recreation ground tomorrow because it will cost too much to repair.

Swings at the Peace Memorial ground are being taken out before they had become too dangerous to use.

Now the trust that runs the recreation ground has to decide whether to take out the remaining equipment, or try to raise around £30,000 for a new play area.

A team of volunteers has formed an action group to try to raise enough money to revamp it.

Group member Pauline Baxter said: "It is the only playground in this area for the three villages and we really don't want to lose it.

"A lot of the play equipment has already gone and what is left is pretty dangerous.

"We are really starting from scratch. Nobody wants to see the play area go, but not many are prepared to help."

Peace Memorial Trust member Kate Thomas said the committee had poured thousands of pounds over the years into maintaining and repairing the equipment, and now had to decide whether the time had come to remove the little that remains.

She said: "We are taking the swings out as a precaution. The only way we could keep them would be to do a lot of repair work.

"It was decided it was better to take them out now before the winter, when they would deteriorate even more.

"We have spent a lot of money on the play area, now we are down to just two or three pieces of equipment."

She said the site was inspected by safety experts every year, and each year repairs were needed.

She said the trust was now faced with deciding whether to close the play area completely.

She said: "Everyone has worked very hard but we are looking at at least £20,000 to start again. It's a massive task. We have to decide whether we can approach local charities and sports foundations for grants, or whether we say enough is enough."
