CLLR Peter Davies clearly believes that the people of Corsham will be better off after the construction of an additional 600 houses in the town. Among the benefits I perceive are an additional 2,000 people in the shops, a further 1,000 children in the schools, an extra 1,000 cars on the roads and longer waits in the doctors' surgeries.
The additional children will be accommodated in existing schools but there is no guarantee that these will be enhanced by the time they are needed. An additional £30,000 will be spent on the two existing doctors' surgeries. Great, that should provide a new bus-shelter outside each.
Spending of £70,000 is proposed on pedestrian access to schools and shops but who walks to school these days and who will maintain the footpaths?
There is little wonder that North Wiltshire District Council did little to publicise the meeting to discuss the development. Of course, NWDC thinks its prayers have been answered. A large slice of its quota for houses dumped in a field with not even the usual 15 per cent of open-space in the plans and the acquisition of some existing leisure areas.
Frankly I believe that they think the people of Corsham dropped off Christmas trees.
