A POLICE car was left with a smashed windscreen after roadblocks were set up in Bradford on Avon to stop drivers attempting to cross the bridge.

The roadblocks were set up on Tuesday night after signs blocking off the bridge were thrown into the river.

Three police cars were brought in to block the roads and officers were advising people not to walk on the bridge until it had been given the all-clear.

One police car was left with a smashed windscreen after a heated argument about crossing the bridge.

PC Ian Howell, of Bradford on Avon police, said some people became annoyed after being told they could not pass.

He said: "Most people accepted the fact but a few were starting to get funny."
