YOUNG motorcycle enthusiasts are on the right track thanks to a pioneering scheme.

The Parks Wheels Workshop opened about a month ago and provides youngsters with practical skills in vehicle maintenance.

Such has been its success that it has even received congratulations from World Superbikes champion, Colin Edwards.

Based in the Park Youth and Sports Centre, the workshop has been developed by the Parks Youth Training Project, Swindon Borough Council and the business community.

Teenagers have been stripping bikes and putting them back together under the guidance of youth workers Max Datta and Helen Jones.

Max, 39, is also a qualified mechanic and motorbike instructor. Helen is a keen biker as well as being dedicated to youth work.

"This project could be a launch pad for a career for some of them," said Max.

Two groups attend one morning a week and Helen Jones believes personal experience has proved crucial in gaining the respect of youngsters.

"Both Max and I have had friends who were killed on motorbikes. We have been able to put across the importance of safety using personal case studies if you like," she said.

The teenagers have also been working with bicycles and go-karts as part of the project. More than 100 bicycles have been donated to the project by local people.
