Campaigners are being asked to attend a council meeting to protest against plans to cut concessionary fares on rail journeys for pensioners.

Leading councillors will be discussing a plan which would give pensioners a choice between half-price fares or £40 of bus travel using magnetic cards.

The scheme would also mean £60 of travel tokens for the mobility impaired.

But campaigning pensioners are angry that the scheme does not include any concessionary fares on the rail network.

The cabinet meeting will take place on Wednesday at 7.30pm and campaign group Fairness for Pensioners is urging as many people as possible to show up to object to the plan.

Frank Avenell, of the campaign group, said: "According to an announcement by John Prescott pensioners should be offered a choice on concessionary fares whether it is rail travel or bus travel. This option does not give anyone the fair choice that they are entitled to. I just hope that the council sees sense and realises that this is not a fair scheme for everyone in the town."

The scheme has been put forward by a task group, made up of councillors, who were asked to look into the concessionary fare situation by the council's policy commission.

They looked at two possible options for concessionary fares and it was option one which was recommended in the end.

The second option the task force was given was a scheme which included a free voucher for a senior railcard and a token system for the mobility impaired, with an eventual increase to £60.

Mr Avenell said: "I don't believe there was widespread consultation from the task group which was set up, as not one of the groups or organisations which were asked about it were given enough time to come up with a considered answer.

"I hope as many people come forward as possible to protest against this scheme which would see their current fare scheme being cut."

A request has also gone out from the council to join the Wiltshire Bus Pass Scheme, which would allow residents to receive half fare travel throughout Wiltshire.
