On Friday, November 3, the Minister for Europe, Keith Vaz, visited Swindon to state the Government's view that Britain should continue with greater integration in Europe.
Friday was a black day for the euro as the European Central Bank committed even more reserves to prop up the single currency.
Incredibly, Mr Vaz advocated joining this risky experiment!
At a luncheon at the Blunsdon House Hotel, organised by the Swindon Chamber of Commerce, Mr Vaz outlined the Government's case for membership of the euro.
His presentation was clear and comprehensive.
However, it was deeply flawed.
The argument for European integration is not a simple and concise case, yet Mr Vaz made no allowance for contrasting opinion.
Indeed, he stated: "Anyone who believes for one moment that we can survive outside (the EU), in my opinion needs their head examined!"
More than half of the people of this country are opposed to membership of the single currency.
Mr Vaz clearly believes that because others may not share his convictions, that they need the services of a psychiatrist!
Such arrogant comments show a deep contempt for the people of this country.
His words cannot and must not go unchallenged.
The Government is determined to take us further and deeper into political union with much of Europe.
The signing of the Treaty of Nice in just a few weeks time will demonstrate this.
Thankfully, countries such as Denmark and Switzerland have shown that the EU is not essential to their future security and prosperity.
Britain too, can survive outside the EU but the citizens of this country must understand the need to resist the tide, indeed the flood, of Government propaganda that is being used to persuade us otherwise.
Remember also, this is being done at taxpayers' expense, while those opposed to these issues receive nothing from central funds.
