Experienced foster carer Caroline Holton became the first Bath and North East Somerset resident to pass her NVQ first unit in fostering.

Ms Holten attended the information evening held by B&NES council for those interested in fostering.

She said: "I have really appreciated the opportunity to return to studying and I am gaining knowledge, skills, confidence and it has made me a better foster carer."

Carers, and those preparing to care, were told during the meeting of B&NES' commitment to support those who foster via preparation and respite facilities.

Short breaks and activities are available to carers and foster children by B&NES project Respite 2000.

The project head Steve Worrell pointed to canoeing, beach fishing and archery among the activities provided for families.

He said: "The children have a wonderful time and leave at the end of the day exhausted but happy."

Family Placement Team manager Claire Cooper pointed to additional support for carers willing to look after teenagers.

She said: "We are currently in the process of implementing a new fee paid scheme for those interested in fostering teenagers."
