News of the Christmas Carnival gave shoppers an early dose of festive cheer when Town Crier Fred Ferris took to the streets to spread the word.

Fred launched the countdown to programme of events when he handed out information leaflets and timetables to shoppers in Swindon centre yesterday.

The leaflets contain listings of all events scheduled to take place in November and December.

It also provides a handy guide for shoppers with Christmas opening times and details of the town's Park and Ride service.

But if you missed Fred, don't worry because leaflets will be sent to most homes in Swindon over the coming weeks.

The countdown to the carnival parade will start on Thursday November 23 with the switch on of the Christmas lights.

Panto star Aleetza Wood from TV's Home and Away will press the button while carol singers sponsored by the Evening Advertiser will entertain crowds outside Debenhams.

Meanwhile six 12ft inflatable dolls will dance in the sky above the Brunel Centre.

They are attached to giant fans which blow them up, allowing them to flap and dance around in the wind.

The Skyguys, which come in the shape of a Santa, snowman, soldier, doll, clown and spaceman are courtesy of the Evening Adver-tiser.

The parade, headed by Fred Ferris, will take place on Sunday, November 26.
