I READ with disbelief the new proposals by Kennet District Council for its skip service to be available for one hour only each week during the mid-afternoon rather than from late afternoon onwards.
This will mean that anyone who works will be denied the facility of the skip service.
As there have been numerous articles regarding the inadequacy of two skips a week where surplus waste is dumped outside the skips, what does Kennet expect to happen now?
Surely it can see that the result will be increased fly tipping which is undesirable and is a backward step.
The new proposed recycling site at Horton Road, I assume, will eventually take over from the present skip service, but this is not obvious from your reports. Hopefully this will be the case, which will bring us somewhere near the excellent service in Swindon, which has been in use for a number of years.
Would it not make sense for Kennet to bite the bullet and at least continue with the present arrangements until this new site comes on stream? At least this would show Kennet to be a forward thinking council despite its woefully long delay in providing captive customers with a basically essential, adequate local facility.
