THE long-awaited public viewing of detailed plans for Wootton Bassett School's new premises won an appreciative response at the school on Monday.

The exhibition attracted governors, staff, parents, pupils and local residents.

"I am very relieved that we have got to this stage, after quite a fewchanges from the original scheme,'' said headteacher Hylton Thomas.

Mr Thomas was joined by Wiltshire county councillor Mollie Groom and architect Jim Mitchison to answer visitors' questions on the long-awaited project, due for completion early in 2002.

The layout incorporates a central covered mall from which all subject areas will be readily accessible.

The two-storey blocks, at a right angle to Lime Kiln, are much lower than the present school building.

There will be two lifts as well as staircases, and full facilities for disabled people.

Instead of cloakrooms, lockers will be provided in each area for coats and personal belongings.

The assembly hall will be much larger than the existing hall, and is designed for flexibility of use with a portable stage.

"It will be the biggest public hall in the town," said Mr Thomas.

Community access, for evening classes, concerts, and so on, will be via an entrance on the side of the school nearest to Lime Kiln Leisure Centre.
