YOUNG BMX riders and skateboard enthusiasts plan to build one of the country's biggest indoor facilities for the sport in Pewsey.

They want to build an L-shaped covered barn next door to The Shak youth club on land owned by neighbouring Pewsey Vale School.

If there are no planning objections, they face raising £250,000 for the project and will be seeking help from National Lottery funds.

The BMX riders and skateboarders formed a club which is now called SK8 2000 nearly two years ago. With the support of Pewsey youth leader Ivor Richards, they have raised several thousand pounds to buy portable ramps which they have been using on tennis courts behind the school.

Now they have embarked on building an outdoor BMX track on the site, which they eventually hope to replace with the indoor facility for the club's 70 members.

One of the SK8 2000 founder members, Ollie Spence, 14, said: "We know we will have to raise a lot of money ourselves but we can't raise all that amount without some help which will hopefully come from the lottery."

Ollie and his friends Michael Lown, Simon Kapuscinski and Chris Roberts are to receive the Youth Action Wiltshire president's cup on November 21 for their work on developing BMX and skateboarding facilities in Pewsey.
