Festival success
In expressing gratitude to those who took part, Elizabeth Drew, chair of the Highworth Festival 2000 committee, has said that wonderful support contributed to this year being the best festival yet.
St Michael's Church
A Christingle service in aid of the Children's Society will be held on November 26 at 4pm in St Michael's Church.
The speaker will be the Rev David Stevens, vicar of Highworth.
During this delightful service, each child receives an orange with a candle and a colourful display of fruit. The Children's Society popularised the Christingle service in 1968 and many are now held in support of its work.
Northview Association
Northview Home and School Association is organising a wine-tasting evening at Northview School on November 17 at 7.30pm with wines from around the world.
The tasting will be conducted by Ken Thomas. Tickets, at £3.50 per person or £6 per couple are available from committee members, the school secretary (01793) 765408 or Ken Thomas at Arkwrights.
Wine and Beer Circle
The Highworth Wine and Beer Circle is holding English country dancing to the live sound of Hogshead in The Rec on November 26 from 7.30pm to 11.30pm.
Tickets at £8 include supper and are available from Avril Brown on (01793) 765487 or Maurice Message on (01793) 763587.
Northview School
Northview School raised a total of £212 as a result of an auction of produce following three harvest events that were held recently.
The money will be donated to a school in Kuazula, Natal, which is named St Gregory College.
Unlike Northview, this school relies totally on charity for its funds.
The school also joined a national day, when money was raised for research into genetic disorders in children. The children were encouraged to wear jeans on the day and £107.50 was raised.
Yoga for fitness
A morning session of yoga for fitness will be held on Saturday from 9.30am until noon in the Highworth Recreation Centre.
For more information or to enrol please call Swindon College on Freephone 0800 7312250.
Twinning Association
The Highworth Twinning Association is holding its annual quiz night tomorrow at 7.30pm in Warneford School.
Tickets are £3 each or £12 per team of four and are available from the Lighthouse Bookshop or Geoffrey Eastwood on (01793) 763436.
The ticket price includes a light supper and there will be a licensed bar.
Women's Institute
At the October meeting of Stanton Fitzwarren WI, a talk was given by Carol Stephens on Reflexology.
This ancient homeopathic practice is based on the principle that reflexes in the feet correspond to each organ, gland and structure of the body. Many find this treatment beneficial in relieving aches and pains.
At the next meeting, to be held on Monday, Highworth author Margaret Bacon, who has just published her 13th novel, will be giving a talk titled Why be a Writer? For further details contact president E Bannister on (01793) 763657.
Victorian evening
As a result of a very successful evening of words and music last year, another evening with a Victorian theme will take place in the council offices on November 17 at 8pm.
The evening will include a mixture of entertainments such as reading, songs, monologues, magic and music.
Admission is £8, which will include supper, drinks and professional entertainment. Guests are encouraged to dress to suit the occasion, with straw hats, shawls and blazers. The audience will be limited to 60, so early booking is advisable.
To reserve a place please contact John Williams on (01793) 764431 or Coun Lynn Vardy on (01793) 762521.
