A FACTORY worker was rushed to hospital with minor burns after an explosion at Surecast foundry in London Road, Devizes, yesterday afternoon.

A furnace blew out fumes and gases into the face of the employee after a build-up of gas gave way at about 1.30pm. He was knocked unconscious and it was at first feared he was seriously hurt.

Six fire tenders attended the incident and, as it was initially treated as a chemical incident, the factory was ordered to be sealed off and evacuated. The order was amended after it was found that no chemicals had been released.

The manwas taken to the burns unit at Salisbury District Hospital.

The Health and Safety Executive hasbeen informed and will carry out an investigation into the incident.
