A new initiative will enhance Swindon's reputation as an important geological centre, by signposting a site of special scientific interest.

The new sign post being revealed tomorrow will explain the importance of the Old Town Railway Cutting Site, which forms one of several nationally important exposures.

The Old Town site was first revealed when the area was quarried in the 19th century when the railway was being built.

The area of the cutting has long been a favourite site with scientific researchers, teachers and enthusiasts and has been enhanced by the help of English Nature's Face Lift programme.

Coun John Taylor (Lab, Cen), lead member for healthy living, said: "We recognise their educational value to the local community and the importance of safeguarding these geological riches."

A senior geologist with English Nature, Andy King, said the Face Lift programme was funding practical works on important sites around the country.

"Together, the sites tell us about the changing environment 150 million years ago, and exhibit one of the most complex Jurassic sections in Britain," he said.

"The rocks contain abundant fossils of the marine animals that flourished in these ancient seas, including fossilised creatures that resemble today's cockles, mussels and oysters.

"These sites can help us to understand the implications of climate change today."
