WESTBURY-based Castle Inn made it a Bonfire Night to remember by starting and finishing the first seven weeks of the West Wilts Five-a-Side League at the top of the table.

No rain stopped play for the five-a-side league which is played at the Leighton Recreation Centre, Westbury.

Improved performances from Steve Jones, player/manager, and Lee Porter have helped the Castle fend off challenges.

Ocean Black continued to press for the top spot and now remain just five points adrift. Ed Fairclough and Mike Lavis are feared defenders within the league and their efforts are acknowledged by the player/manager, Sean Lanigan. The Hilperton-based team are now beginning to find their feet.

Trowbridge team United Front hit back this week. They grabbed six points by beating Phil's Five and gaining victory by default against Direct Sports. Barry Davies's red card marred the day and his suspension along with Dennis Lafayette's absence will prove difficult to cope with.

New signing Guy Rowley could not help Phil's Five make progress on those above them, despite a truly fine chip to beat keeper Andy Lawson in the game against Red Five but more special things are expected from the young player in the future.

The league cup starts on Sunday.

For the next three weeks, eight teams divide into two groups of four and will play each other.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals to be played on February 4.

November 12, 19 and 26: Group A, 1pm-3pm, Direct Sports, Ocean Black, Frome Rangers and United Front; Group B, 3-5pm, Phil's Five, Red Five, Castle, Untouchables.

This week is the official launch of the website for players and those interested in following the league. www.westwilts5aside.co.uk is updated weekly and contains results, reports, fixtures, team sheets, tables and more.
