Mr Gledhill's letter in last week's issue of the Wiltshire Times offers a one-sided view of the Hilperton Gap proposed new road.

That same writer also issued a news sheet, a copy of which was placed in a prominent position in the window of a St Thomas's Road newsagent, stating:

Good News The Wiltshire County Council has decided to drop the Hilperton Gap Road from its Local Transport Plan.

He also had the audacity to state this was a significant victory. A significant victory for whom?

As always, there are two sides to any problem and Mr Gledhill has not taken into account the long-suffering people of Hilperton village.

Hilperton villagers need that new road through the Hilperton Gap, that is a fact. The houses, in Church Street, some of them very old, are so close to the road that the vibrations from all the heavy traffic must be shaking their very foundations. As for the occupants, they may well become nervous wrecks if this heavy traffic flow continues.

Does no one out there beyond our village care?

I am generally opposed to the constant infringement of our green areas, but here I am talking about the effects on the lives of so many people, on the effects to property and the possible danger to pedestrians. Make no mistake, we would be stupid to think an accident will not occur in our village. The law of averages must mean there will be an accident one day. To date we can count our blessings, but what of tomorrow?

We are told by Mr Gledhill that the bad news is that the county council has made it clear that it will view positively a road and housing package in the Hilperton Gap, paid for by a private developer.

If that is to be the price for our salvation and being realistic so be it.
