BARRY Fry's side have yet to find any consistency as they adjust to life in a higher division.

The euphoria of a Wembley play -off triumph has not been enough to propel the London Road outfit towards the top of Division Two.

Town's hosts crashed 2-1 at Bournemouth last week. Despite piling on the pressure at Dean Court, Fry's side were punished with a goal five minutes from time.

The flamboyant boss was less than impressed with his side's inability to tuck away their chances.

He said: "We had so many chances it's embarrassing to come away without taking enough of them to get the three points."

Home form has been steady. Posh have triumphed four times at London Road, with only two defeats.

Despite starting their away campaign in impressive style, Fry's side have started to wobble on their travels. Saturday's reverse at Bournemouth was their sixth of the campaign and they were eliminated from the Worthington Cup by Luton Town.

Andy Clarke's goals have helped Posh into mid-table, but despite the backing of businessman Peter Boizot, pre-season expectations were fairly modest.

Second Division survival was seen as the main target.

The only additions during the summer were midfielder Richard Forsyth from Blackpool and Leon McKenzie, a £25,000 buy from Crystal Palace.

The club's academy is already starting to bear fruit. Goalkeeper Martin Tyler and left back Adam Drury have both graduated from Posh's youth set-up.

Scouts from Premier League clubs are regular visitors to London Road in the hope of snapping future stars such as Simon Davies and Matthew Etherington, who were both snapped up by Spurs last season.

Youth is clearly the priority for Peterborough, but Barry Fry's side also boasts experience in the form of David Oldfield.

The veteran midfielder has enjoyed successful spells with Leicester, Manchester City and Luton Town.

He is likely to be pulling the strings in the Posh midfield.

While Andy Clarke's goals have been crucial in ensuring a mid- table position, he has enjoyed support up front from Jason Lee.

The former Forest, Watford and Chesterfield striker has settled well at London Road, netting in the recent win over Colchester United.

The last six games have mirrored Posh's inconsistent season to date.

Victories over Colchester and Notts County have been mixed in with defeats at Bournemouth, Bristol City and Brentford.

A goal from Oldfield secured a useful draw at high-flying Walsall.
