TRIBUTES to Britain's war dead were due to begin today.

The Swindon branch of the Royal British Legion planned a ceremony and two minutes' silence at the Cenotaph in Regent Street at 11am.

A service of remembrance was planned for this evening at Holy Rood Roman Catholic Church, beginning at 7.45pm and featuring the first appearance by Swindon Male Voice Choir since their return from a concert tour in Portugal.

Tomorrow various ceremonies will take place across the area.

In Swindon, a parade to the cenotaph will be led by RAF veterans, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and veterans of the Korean War, which began 50 years ago.

Others taking part in the parade, organised by the Royal British Legion, include Territorial Army reservists from the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry Squa-dron and the Royal Rifle Volunteers.

The parade will assemble in Granville Street car park at 10.20pm, moving off no later than 10.45am along Commercial Road to the Cenotaph.

After the service, Swin-don Mayor Coun Arthur Archer will take the salute.

Also tomorrow, a remembrance service will be held at the Cricklade War Mem-orial.

At the Steam Musem in Churchward at 3pm tomorrow, a rededication ceremony will be performed at the memorial to the railway workers who gave their lives for their country in wartime.

Stories and pictures of the commemorations will appear in the Evening Adv-ertiser on Monday.
