THE Ridgeway National Trust is asking off-road drivers and motorcyclists not to take their vehicles along the Ridgeway due to the recent spell of wet weather.

The Land Access and Rec-reation Association has agreed to back this request.

Unless there is a lengthy spell of dry weather, this voluntary restraint will remain in force until March 31 2001.

It applies to all sections of the Ridgeway except for the three-mile stretch between Fox Hill, south east of Swindon, and the B4000 south of Ashbury this section mostly has a hard surface.

Jos Joslin, National Trails Officer for The Ridgeway said "We are delighted that LARA has responded so positively. The Ridgeway is incredibly wet, making it vulnerable to damage if people take their vehicles onto it at the moment.

"This is a request for people to voluntarily decide not to use The Ridgeway and I do hope all recreational drivers will heed it. If they do, The Ridgeway and all those people who enjoy it will benefit hugely."
