I READ with interest your November 1 article "From creation to flood in five minutes", which showed South Swindon MP Julia Drown officially opening Nightingale Wood, a project which was co-ordinated by Great Western Community Forest.

By agreeing to attend this official opening for the Great Western Community Forest, an organisation which functions in partnership with Swindon Borough Council, Ms Drown is effectively sanctioning their works. I therefore suggest that she conducts an inquiry into the true nature of the contents at Shaw Tip and ensures that the findings are made public.

Ms Drown obviously takes a keen interest in local issues and is probably aware that Shaw Tip is both a former and current waste disposal site, part of which has been landscaped by Swindon Borough Council in partnership with the Great Western Community Forest.

The Shaw Tip site has been described by the leader of Swindon Borough Council, Coun Sue Bates, the deputy leader, Coun Derek Benfield, and director of Swindon Contractors Mr John Short as a former domestic waste tip. However, this statement is totally contradicted by the former plant superintendent of Barnfield Road incinerator, who said that "Shaw Tip contains huge amounts of toxic industrial wastes including tonnes of blue asbestos from the old railway works".

My previous requests to Swindon Borough Council for a full explanation concerning the true nature of this site have fallen on deaf ears and been ignored.

I therefore request that Ms Drown inquires why the information given by Swindon Borough Council was incorrect; why this site wasn't treated in a more sensitive way; why it wasn't developed as brown field site, thus saving valuable countryside; what the true legacy being left for future generations is; whether the council plans to leave the site as it is and continue to disguise the true nature of its contents.

Perhaps Ms Drown will be able to get the full response from Swindon Borough Council which is so obviously being withheld from myself and the other ordinary citizens.
