Nearly 100 potential army recruits have come forward following a recruitment drive by the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment.

The regiment, which is currently based in Northern Ireland, has spent the last week touring Wiltshire and will continue the drive until Saturday.

Soldiers gathered in Regent Street and The Parade to hand out leaflets and speak to people interested in the career.

The stands were boosted by the added attraction of a rowing competition. Participants took part in a speed test on a rowing machine to win a mountain bike.

The winner, Jamie Middleton, from Swindon, will be presented with the bike tomorrow morning in The Parade.

The regiment is hoping to recruit as many people as possible, mainly in the 16-28 age range.

Major David Brown, who is heading the campaign, said 98 people had asked for further information from the tour.

"It has gone very well," he said. "Joining the army is a great career and a great challenge and we were pleased so many have shown an interest."
