AS a newcomer to the area, I have to say, that the atmosphere of Devizes town centre, with the lovely big trees and tiny streets is something which once lost will be irreplaceable.
The town bustles on market day, and it's a real joy to visit. This in turn makes it a more pleasant place to shop, and attracts more shoppers and then more shops.
If I have to shop outside Calne, I will always choose Devizes. I find Chippenham sterile and unwelcoming, mostly because it has no mature trees to soften the hard landscaping and no narrow "lanes" to discover.
I sincerely hope Kennet District Council doesn't let the charm and atmosphere of Devizes be destroyed as it's definitely one of the main draws of the town and gives it a unique character.
