I WOULD like to reply to last week's letter headlined "What a damp squib" by David E Brown.
We as a charity organisation and I use the word charity in the true sense of the word, give our time and efforts for free. We work hard throughout the year to raise money for local people in need.
Our firework display is our biggest event, requiring months of planning and preparation. The display is always well attended and of a very high standard, attracting people from as far afield as Salisbury, Trowbridge and Marlborough, many of whom buy tickets in advance.
The firework company which manufacture and design the display also send a team to Devizes from Devon. They set up, co-ordinate, and light the fireworks, ensuring a professional and safe show.
There are many other considerations to take into account, in the event of a postponement. Availability of the venue, Scout and Guide Band, firework company, active helpers, pre-paid ticket holders etc.
The biggest consideration is the weather but there is no guarantee that a rescheduled event would be any drier.
Last year we had the same dilemma. It rained all day but eased off a couple of hours before the display, with a record attendance on the night.
After consideration we decided to continue with the display this year.
We were encouraged to see so many people braving the elements, to enjoy the display including approximately 40 per cent who paid on the gate.
Let's hope next year will be kinder to all concerned.
