The case of seven months old Jamie Oldacre who died as the result of a savage attack by his mentally inadequate father is a sad and terrible story.
Paul Oldacre, who repeatedly punched Jamie because he was annoyed by the baby's crying, is 27 but has a mental age of eight.
This isn't the first case of its kind, and we should be asking ourselves whether people like Oldacre should ever be allowed to have care of their own, or anyone else's, vulnerable children.
As he starts his life sentence, we hope his story will warn every parent who feels they are at the end of their tether that they and their children urgently need help.
