VICAR David Seymour has been forced to take on the role of lollipop man to ensure children in Bradford on Avon can walk to school in safety.
Christ Church School is desperate for a new crossing patrol officer to supervision the crossing at Bath Road but has been unable to find anyone.
Headteacher Peter Mountstephen said Mr Seymour had stepped into the breach for the moment but it was a situation which could not continue much longer.
He said: "We just cannot recruit anyone and are having to rely on volunteers. I am just flabbergasted. There are lots of jobs going in education at the moment, like headships, which I can understand but this is great fun and is well-paid for almost no effort.
"David has said he can do it until Christmas but it is not his job. We need someone there because otherwise children are at risk."
Mr Mountstephen said the increase in traffic in the town meant the role was vital but it did not seem to be the type of job people were after.
He said: "We need someone with a conscience who wouldn't mind spending a bit of time each day ensuring the kids get to and from school safely. On the occasions I have done it, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a lovely way to spend time."
The job pays about £50 a week and anyone interested should contact the school on (01225) 863444.
