THE refusal of planning permission for a Sainsbury's store in Westbury Leigh looks set to delay other developments at the site.

Sainsbury's and Persimmon Homes were denied planning permission to build a store in the town last Thursday.

The plan had attracted fierce criticism from town councillors and the Wessex and Westbury Chambers of Commerce, amid fears the store could spell the end for Westbury town centre.

A separate application to establish the layout of the area around the store site was deferred for further investigation. The development brief earmarks the area for development including a community building, recycling centre and place of worship.

At a Westbury town council meeting on Monday, David Thornton said enough homes had to be built on the site to reach a trigger point for other amenities.

District councillor Gordon King, who supported the application, said: "The doctor's surgery and the pharmacy were dependent on Sainsbury's being there. They need that customer base."
