SCHOOL caretaker Alan Hunt refused to tell the police who was riding his Harley David-son motorbike when it was clocked speeding because he thought it infringed his human rights.

The 39-year-old, who runs cycling proficiency tests, discovered he was breaking the law when he was charged with speeding and failing to give information about a driver.

Hunt, of Chestnut Avenue, Swindon, said he had been told by someone at a motorcycle charity called Pinkertons that he didn't have to say who was riding because it meant he could incriminate himself.

But when he appeared before town magistrates he pleaded guilty to both offences, accepting he did not have a defence to the charges.

The court heard that he had been clocked at 61mph on the A346 at Chiseldon, where the speed limit is 50mph.

Defending himself Hunt said: "It was stupidity on my part. I took the word of someone. I thought they knew what they were talking about."

Magistrates fined him £60 for speeding, £20 for failing to give details of the rider and ordered him to pay £35 costs.
