Dancers, singers and entertainers will all converge on Old Town this month for the grand Christmas lights switch-on.

The event on November 30 is billed as a real festive treat for all the family.

The fun kicks off at 6pm with Robbo the Clown and ends with entertainment from the Highworth Jugglers. Panto characters from the Wyvern Theatre's production of Aladdin, the Tanwood Dancers, the Swindon Male Voice Choir, fun band The Locomotion and even Father Christmas will also be joining in.

The lights will be switched on at 7pm by Swindon Mayor Arthur Archer after a countdown by the Town Crier. They will remain up for six weeks, stretching from Devizes Road and Bath Road to Wood Street and along Victoria Road.

This year, organisers the Old Town Business and Professional Association need to raise £10,000 to maintain, service and put the lights up. They are a quarter of the way to the target but are confident local companies and retailers will come forward with the rest of the cash.

Harry Bromley, Christ-mas Lights co-ordinator for the Christmas Lights Appeal 2000, said he was optimistic that the amount will be raised by local shops and businesses.

who recognise the importance of continuing this wonderful festive tradition which the whole family can enjoy."
