Three young Swindon chess players brought back five prizes between them when they travelled to Devon for the Torbay Junior Congress.

Ten-year-old Adam Wilts-hire, from Old Town, won the under-10 category with six wins out of six, and followed it up by sharing fourth place in the under-12s the following day.

Robbie Dams, 11, of Westlea, took second place in the under-14 age group, while Adam's brother, Liam, came equal third. Robbie went on to share second place in the under-12 category.

Both Robbie and Adam qualified for the prestigious London Junior Championships this Christmas.

n Commonweal School's chess team overwhelmed a relatively inexperienced team from Prior Park School, Cricklade, to move into the second round of The Times Schools Chess Champ-ionships.

The six-strong team, headed by junior chess internationals, Philip Hayward and Josh Hall, won the match 6-0. Robbie Dams, Liam Wiltshire, Rachel Fitch and Edith Glennie completed the team.
