A woman was taken to hospital with suspected spinal injuries after the car she was travelling in plunged into a ditch.

She was cut free from the vehicle, a grey Renault 5 GT Turbo, by firefighters using hydraulic cutting gear to remove the roof.

The driver, a man in his 30s, was able to get out himself. He was uninjured but badly shaken. The couple were both local.

The accident happened on the B4553 Purton to Cricklade road at Purtonstoke at 3.30pm yesterday.

The car, which was travelling towards Cricklade, lost control on a bend and careered into the ditch.

It was spotted by a passing lorry driver who stopped his vehicle to help.

The woman, also believed to be in her 30s, was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon after complaining of back and chest pains. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
