Marlborough High Street and other parts of the town centre are sorely in need of a spring clean, according to members of the newly-formed Marlborough Area Development Trust.
The trust has sent a list of problems affecting the town centre to Marlborough Town Council, Kennet District Council, Wiltshire County Council the Chamber of Commerce and the Civic Society.
Trust members want to put the sparkle back into the High Street and say issues which need to be tackled include:
Litter and the need for the present street cleaners who, they say, do an excellent job to be given longer hours.
Blistered and peeling paint on the cast iron bollards in the High Street.
Tackling the problem of weeds.
Cracked paving in New Road in particular.
The need for a town notice board to replace the 'messy' collection of notices outside the Somerfield supermarket.
Consideration given to a taxi rank in the town centre.
Ways to reduce the pigeon problem because of the mess and the health risks.
Trust chairman Melvyn Lillywhite has written to the councils and amenity groups asking them to suggest ways that pride can be restored in the High Street.
In his letter Mr Lillywhite said: "We appreciate that, in themselves, all of the points listed are relatively minor, except where additional manpower is suggested.
If action was taken to improve all of these points perhaps a sparkle could be put back into the High Street for the benefit of local people, local traders and our many visitors to the town."
The trust is urging the councils and the amenity groups to reply by the beginning of December so that an action plan for the town centre can be drawn up.
